Since 2008, BRAC Sierra Leone empowers vulnerable communities with health, education, agriculture, and youth development.
We empower women and families to break poverty and build resilience. Our proven, cost-effective programs blend social development across health, education, food security, and livelihoods with market-based approaches. We also extend financial inclusion by providing responsible banking services.

Our approach
We boost food security and livelihoods by strengthening market systems and championing sustainable agriculture. Our holistic approach supports communities—especially women and youth—with technical training, input support, financial access, and value chain connections. We help farmers, service providers, and agro-entrepreneurs adopt eco-friendly practices, build robust local value chains, and adapt to climate change. Our initiatives raise household incomes, create rural jobs, and enhance nutrition for Sierra Leone’s growing population. Additionally, we have established a network of self-employed community agriculture, livestock, and poultry promoters who play key roles in local value chains.
Agriculture, Food Security and Livelihood

Our early childhood development program addresses the critical period for children aged three to five. The play-based curriculum incorporates social-emotional learning and identity awareness using a low-cost, high-impact approach. BRAC’s award-winning model breaks intergenerational poverty cycles through early learning opportunities. We support governments and stakeholders with teacher training, mentoring, and curriculum development, benefiting over 10,000 children in our centers.
Early Childhood Development

Our trained, all-women community health workers form a vital network of volunteers who deliver quality, affordable primary healthcare services in their communities and facilitate linkages with formal providers. They provide prenatal and postnatal care to women and diagnose and treat children under five for diseases like malaria, diarrhea, and pneumonia. We build the capacity of our program staff, who conduct static health forums and supervise health clubs in communities and schools. Our work is in collaboration with district health management teams to conduct awareness sessions and radio shows on preventing and controlling communicable diseases.

The five-year program will operate across seven African countries. It applies BRAC’s globally recognized, evidence-based approaches using microfinance, youth empowerment, agriculture, and skills development to improve lives and livelihoods.

The language of learning: why it matters in Sierra Leon
BRAC explores how language learning shapes education in Sierra Leone and the Philippines. Using native languages enhances literacy, comprehension, and cognitive skills. The blog outlines evidence-based strategies aligning teaching with learners’ linguistic realities, fostering inclusive, effective learning environments that boost academic outcomes.
