Our approach

Our agriculture, food security, and livelihood program enables smallholder farmers to access training and quality inputs such as seeds, fertilizers, pesticides, and livestock feed, along with finance and market linkages. Our climate-smart agricultural practices help farmers boost incomes, improve food and nutrition security, and build resilience to climate change. We support crop and livestock integration from production to market in value chains like coffee, maize, poultry, and horticulture, with a focus on enhancing the livelihoods of women and young people.

Agriculture, Food Security and Livelihood

Our accelerated learning approach targets adolescent girls who have left the formal education system, offering a second chance at secondary school or vocational training. Secondary school girls receive digital literacy and entrepreneurship skills, while out-of-school girls gain financial and vocational training and tailored microloans to start their businesses

Education

Our early childhood development program addresses the critical period for children aged three to five. The play-based curriculum incorporates social-emotional learning and identity awareness using a low-cost, high-impact approach. BRAC’s award-winning model breaks intergenerational poverty cycles through early learning opportunities. We support governments and stakeholders with teacher training, mentoring, and curriculum development, benefiting over 10,000 children in our centers.

Early childhood development

In Tanzania, the AIM program equips 337,525 adolescent girls and young women with entrepreneurship, employability, and life skills training, plus the tools to start and scale their businesses. This five-year program spans seven African countries, leveraging BRAC’s evidence-based approaches in microfinance, youth empowerment, agriculture, and skills development.

Mastercard Foundation Accelerating Impact for Young Women in Partnership with BRAC (AIM)

Our mission is to responsibly provide a range of financial services to those at the bottom of the pyramid. We focus on women in rural, hard-to-reach areas, creating self-employment opportunities, building financial resilience, and empowering women economically.

Microfinance

BRAC Enterprises Tanzania Limited (BETL) is a registered private company in Tanzania that is piloting a social enterprise model to enhance early childhood development in Dar es Salaam. BRAC aims to catalyze the sector by creating a sustainable business model for low-cost, high-quality, scalable play-based early learning. As of 2024, BETL operates four early childhood centers and a mobile center, all promoting play-based learning.

Social Enterprise

The Graduation approach is globally recognized for tackling extreme poverty through holistic interventions. We tailor the program to address the unique challenges faced by people in extreme poverty, including young people, women and girls, and individuals with disabilities. The program combines income generation, access to social protection services, financial support, and social empowerment.

Ultra-Poor Graduation

We merge social and economic empowerment with education to help young people realize their potential. Our evidence-based Empowerment and Livelihood for Adolescents (ELA) model empowers girls and young women aged 12–24. Life skills, vocational training, livelihood training, and startup kits enable them to launch small-scale businesses. ELA clubs provide mentor-led, community-supported safe spaces where young women build self-confidence, critical thinking, leadership, and social skills, while also enhancing employability through sports and games.
