Our approach

We aim to improve livelihoods and self-reliance for refugees and host communities and ensure better integration of disaster risk reduction in all our programs. For robust emergency response, we focus on improving the capacity for timely, efficient, and gender-sensitive interventions. We focus on strengthening local emergency preparedness and response among households, schools, and communities. Targeting individuals from refugee-hosting and disaster-prone districts, our comprehensive approach ensures resilience and support for those most in need.

Humanitarian Response

Our early childhood development program addresses the critical period for children aged three to five. The play-based curriculum incorporates social-emotional learning and identity awareness using a low-cost, high-impact approach. BRAC’s award-winning model breaks intergenerational poverty cycles through early learning opportunities. We support governments and stakeholders with teacher training, mentoring, and curriculum development, benefiting over 10,000 children in our centers.

Early Childhood Development

Our education program takes a community-based, participatory approach to learning. Schools are supported by a cradle-to-career network spanning early childhood to tertiary education, including access to libraries, adolescent clubs, and adult learning. We prioritize joyful learning, and engage participatory, alternative and innovative approaches for socio-emotional learning, play and character development.

Education

We complement government efforts to implement essential maternal and child healthcare services through over 4,500 volunteers known as community health promoters. Our health promoters are all women, recruited from local communities, and make door-to-door visits to the last mile. We make health systems stronger and deliver care in the most vulnerable communities while actively supporting the health ministries in the locations we operate.

Health

BRAC Uganda Bank Limited is a credit institution regulated by the Bank of Uganda under the tier 2 financial institutions category. We provide financial services responsibly, focusing on women living in poverty, to create self-employment opportunities, build financial resilience, and promote women’s entrepreneurial spirit.

Microfinance

The Graduation approach is a globally recognized solution that offers holistic support to enable people to chart a pathway out of extreme poverty. We customize the program to address unique challenges, i.e, young people living in extreme poverty, people living with disabilities, and people living in refugee settlements

Ultra-Poor Graduation

We create opportunities that support positive outcomes for young people to achieve social and economic empowerment through exercising their agency. Our adolescent clubs are safe spaces supporting girls who have dropped out of school, and are at the risk of early marriage or pregnancy. They have access to various training including life skills, financial literacy, vocational and entrepreneurial training, and in-kind startup capital, and are supported with linkages to work opportunities.
