Video | PBS Newshour on risks to Bangladesh’s TB gains after USAID cuts
PBS Newshour investigates how the end of USAID funding threatens Bangladesh’s progress against tuberculosis.
When it comes to the question, ‘does foreign aid work?,’ look no further than Bangladesh’s fight against tuberculosis. Deaths from this highly contagious disease fell to 44,000 in 2023—down from 73,000 in 2015—thanks in large part to a decade-long, $100 million USAID investment.
In July, PBS Newshour, in partnership with the Pulitzer Center, joined BRAC teams on the ground to see the effects of USAID cuts. BRAC Executive Director Asif Saleh warns, “if [tuberculosis] is not controlled within the borders, then it’s just going to spread… no country will be immune.” He calls for greater self-reliance among NGOs, and new approaches to development—so programs can keep finding patients sooner, treating them faster, and saving more lives.
