Video | PBS Newshour on Bangladesh’s climate crisis amid rising sea levels

PBS Newshour investigates how rising sea levels and other climate challenges are creating a crisis of climate refugees that are forced to adapt.

Asif Saleh Executive Director of BRAC speaking in this PBS Newshour story about climate change in Bangladesh.

In July, PBS Newshour, in partnership with the Pulitzer Center, joined BRAC teams on the ground to see the effects of climate change in Bangladesh. While local communities and organizations have the solutions, they often lack the resources to implement them.

BRAC Executive Director Asif Saleh shares, “Local organizations are probably getting about 4 to 6 percent of the [climate] funding that is coming in. They have billions of dollars, but their bureaucratic processes make it impossible. If you record all the promises that have been made over the last few years, calculate that, and look at how much money has gone to the ground, it’s laughable.”

He calls for greater investment in locally-led climate solutions, so that the people most impacted by climate disasters are able to adapt.
