The holidays are just around the corner, and the season of giving is the perfect time to give back. Over 700 million people around the world are experiencing extreme poverty this season, and their circumstances have been exacerbated by conflict, climate shocks, and disaster.

There is no better time to take poverty personally. Discover five small, easy actions you can take to make a big impact for people living in poverty.

1. Give an impactful holiday gift.

Are you struggling to find the perfect gift for a loved one? Looking for a last-minute gift that still feels thoughtful? Give a gift that makes an impact this holiday season: the gift of hope. When you donate to support families living in poverty, dedicate your gift to a loved one and share the news in a thoughtful card.

BRAC offers the option to send a notification to a loved one via email when you donate in their honor. Simply make a donation to BRAC, and click “dedicate this gift” to give in honor of a loved one. It’s a thoughtful and personal gift that keeps giving back: sparking hope for people living in poverty, and creating a ripple effect within their families and communities.

2. Donate your small change.

There’s no such thing as small change: every gift can make a difference for people living in poverty. Provide unrestricted support to your favorite charity to prioritize rushing your gift exactly where it is most needed: whether educating a child, investing in a young mother, or training a smallholder farmer. Even a small gift can have a big impact. Want to amplify the impact of your gift? Check with your employer to see if they offer a company match, or save on your capital gains taxes by contributing stock or cryptocurrency

3. Start a holiday fundraiser.

During the holiday season, people seem to feel a lot more generous — and research shows they are. People in the US are significantly more likely to give to charity at the end of the year, so there’s no better time to raise money for your favorite charity. Share why you support your charity of choice, and spread the word on social media. Supporters have run races, thrown parties, hosted school and community events, and more to boost the impact of their fundraisers. By launching a fundraiser to fight poverty, you inspire your community and multiply your impact to support families living in poverty.

4. Stay in the know and spread the word.

Knowledge is power. Want to do more to fight poverty this holiday season? Stay informed about your favorite organization and their work and spread the word within your community. Sign up for your favorite charity’s email list to receive updates, follow them on social media for real time updates, and visit their website or blog to dive deeper. Then, spread the word on poverty solutions within your community by sharing your favorite stories and updates on social media. By staying informed and spreading the word, you can help make a difference in the lives of people living in poverty.

5. Resolve to take poverty personally in 2024.

2024 is nearly here, and it’s time to start thinking about New Year’s resolutions. Resolve to take poverty personally in 2024 by setting up a recurring monthly donation for your favorite charity. While nonprofits receive a large influx of funds at the end of the year when people are feeling particularly generous, it’s critical to continue investing in human potential year round. Even chipping in as little as $5 a month, or the cost of a cup of coffee, can make a difference. By becoming a monthly donor, you are forging sustainable change year round, causing a ripple effect for families living in poverty.
